It is a proven fact now that women are not behind men in any field. In history also, we find a lot of women, who were scholars, warriors and so on. In the field of piracy also, there were some big names, which are popular even today.
In the golden age of piracy in Europe, two names were widely famous - Anne Bonny and Mary Read. On the other hand, a big name could be heard in China also, which was of Ching Shih. This will not be wrong to say that Ching Shih was the strongest pirate across the globe. Taking inspiration from these historical freebooters, some female swashbucklers could be witnessed in the pirate themed films as well. Angelica of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the perfect instance in this regard. The pirate clothes in the styles of these female swashbucklers are widely popular in the recent times.
The details about these real and fictional raiders are as under:
Anne Bonny: Anne Bonny was the member of the pirate John "Calico Jack" Rackham's crew. She had come to Bahamas with her husband James Bonny where she began to mingle with swashbucklers. Finally, she left her husband and became the mistress of Calico. Both had spent a long time in the seas and Anne also gave birth to Rackham's first child. They got involved in the ships together. In 1720, Rackham's crew was captured. Rackham was executed, but there is no evidence found that any punishment was given to her. Some sources claim that her father managed her release from jail and took her to her hometown in Charles Town, South Carolina. There, she gave birth to Rackham's second child, did another marriage, gave birth to ten children and died in the age of 80 as a respectable woman.
